Rainy day with Danielle and Caitlin/Sister Shoot

So we had a photo-shoot today and it was super fun. It was a really overcast day, it was pretty much drizzling on us the whole time. I sort of had it in my mind that I wanted this to mostly be black and white so that is why there is so much of it. Some of these images are instant favorites of mine. We laughed a whole lot!! Fairy Stories and Other Nonsense

Forgive me if I seem distracted lately. I'm Currently swept up in one of the most beautiful stories I have ever read. It's an absolutely enchanting little tale not suited for every ones taste I'm sure. I've always felt that I loved reading but could rarely find a book that I could really get swallowed up in. Until just recently diving head first back into; or for the first time; children's literature. There is just something about it and it's heroes that captures my interest. I very much believe that there is a lot more to "kid-lit" than people think.

Anyway I'm sure you're wondering (if there is in fact anyone reading this...) what book I would be talking about. The book is: "A Little Princess". Most people will roll their eyes and scoff and such an insignificant story about a little girl from another time. I however have a sneaking suspicion that I may in fact BE Sara Crewe. Maybe it's because I've always been such a daddy's girl. Bare with me...I've been working non-stop for about three weeks now. And stories like: "A Wrinkle in Time", "The Mysterious Benedict society", and of course "The Chronicles of Narnia." have been my escape.

So you're thinking: "But Leah, REALLY...children's books? Aren't you like 22 now?" To which I answer: Yes. I am 22. But that doesn't mean I've forgotten who I was, like so many others. I cart the three books I'm currently reading (join goodreads.com - but be careful it's addictive, thanks paige.) with me everywhere I go. And as I was telling Megan the other night I often see people glance down at my books and say something to the effect of: "I remember that book." And for one brief second I can hear it in their voices. The child they once were is tugging at their heart begging them for a visit. But then just as quickly as it appeared it is gone.

We are consumed so much so with our bustling lives that we sometimes forget. Forgive my cheese-filled ramblings please. But these sorts of stories will keep me happy long after the book bindings have broken, the jackets have worn, and the words have faded. I will read the stories until I am (hopefully) old and gray. And I will never forget.

This is my best friend Megan. We took these shots together the other weekend when we realized we are both photographers and we have not one good picture of us together. We both took turns setting the timer but Megan gets the credit for the nice edits.

This was originally shot for a kind of untraditional family shot. But I decided to submit it to the Cancer Survival project that John Rash and his wife are doing. I have no idea if they'll like it or not, or if it even qualifies. There are definitely things I would change about this but I like it.

This was an assignment but I also used it as personal work. This, being my best friends boyfriend. He wanted a nice photo of himself in his fire gear. He's already graduated the fire academy, but is finishing his 4 year degree. He volunteers at a local station and he actually completely missed the burning of this three story house, and was pretty upset about it.

That's me on the right, in the ugliest outfit of the three. My mother insisted on dressing me like ... that. My favorite thing about this picture are the tags on me and my friend. It's like we're cattle and they need those to separate and lead us into the right direction. Anyway I've had this feeling quite a few times in my life. First day... first day of kindergarten, first day of middle school, first day of high school, first day of work, first day of art school, and then first day of RCC. Soon it will be my first day of a real job. Unbelievable really. I feel excited to get the rest of my life underway-but at the same time I'm terrified of lost time. But I guess that's just silly-besides, we'll all have the pictures to remind us, or something.

This is my assignment for my portrait class. The assignment was to shoot a child in studio. Caitlin is usually a very good model, but she really gave me a hard time that night. If I could fix anything about this portrait I would straighten her skirt and her shirt so that they weren't so wrinkly. And I would refine her right hand so it didn't look so awkward. Otherwise I was pretty happy with this portrait.

This was the first bridal portrait I did for my wedding class. My model; Sarah is 15. She chose to wear her mother's wedding dress from the early 80's. It is pretty old fashioned but Sarah pulled it off beautifully.

Gracie is my niece and is two years old. She loves having photoshoots with me which is extremely rare for a toddler of her age. She's great, one of my best models. I've almost taken it upon myself to start to chronical her life, my own personal project. It will not only be her but my entire family. I'm really excited about it and I hope it's something Grace will treasure when she gets older.

This is one of four bridal assignments. I decided to use the studio for this particular model. If I could do this portrait again, I would refine a few things such as; making her arm position not quite as dramatic. I would have also lit it more frontal to get rid of her hair shadows and the shadow on her neck. I would have asked her to tilt her head upwards as well. And lastly I would have had a big bouquet instead of just one rose.

This is my engaged couple shot. I decided to do sort of a bird's eye view of them. I was happy with how it turned out. I was especially happy with the highlights in the eyes and the skin tones I got. I also sort of made it high contrast to knock out the grass beside them and turn it black so the the attention is solely on them.
